Agronomy Meets Logistics: The Humic Advantage

Planning for 2027: Making Humics Work on the Farm

As harvest results come into focus, growers and retailers are already evaluating what worked, what did not and where new approaches could strengthen their 2027 crop plans.

In this RealAg Radio interview, Justin Miller, Black Earth Director of Sales for North America, discusses how humic products are becoming practical tools across the growing season and what they must deliver to earn a lasting place in a crop program.

From fall application to full-season use

Humics have traditionally been associated with fall soil applications. Today, different formulations can be used in the fall, at planting and during the growing season.

The right product depends on the intended outcome, application timing and existing fertility or crop-protection program. Humic products are not interchangeable, making product selection and clear application guidance important.

Making the agronomy practical

A product may offer agronomic potential, but it will not be adopted consistently if it disrupts planting, spraying or fertilizer application. As Justin explains, “logistics trump agronomy.”

Granular products must flow properly through application equipment, while liquids must remain compatible with their intended tank partners. Black Earth continues to expand its compatibility testing and guidance to help growers incorporate humics without creating unnecessary operational risk.

Product availability matters as well. Black Earth now positions inventory across approximately eight North American warehouses, from Florida to Saskatoon. Its new Calgary Operations Centre will add storage and distribution capacity while improving access to major transportation routes.

The objective is simple: put products closer to customers so they are available when agronomic decisions are made.

Ease of use must be matched by value

For humics to move from a few trial acres into a broader crop program, they must be easy to use and deliver measurable value.

Black Earth uses a 3:1 return as an internal benchmark when evaluating product performance. This is not a blanket guarantee, but it reflects the value growers reasonably expect when adding another input.

Third-party trials across different crops, soils and regions are central to establishing where products perform consistently and how recommendations should be refined.

Justin highlights two examples:

  • Magna soluble granular is primarily positioned for in-furrow application with granular fertilizer through an air seeder. Black Earth continues to see encouraging trial performance across canola, wheat and pulses.
  • Alpha provides a liquid option for use with compatible starter fertilizers and selected in-season applications. Expanded screening with herbicides and fungicides is helping provide clearer compatibility guidance.

Humics are gaining ground because growers now have more ways to incorporate them. Continued adoption will depend on choosing the right product for the objective, fitting it into existing operations and supporting its use with credible evidence.
